Current Authentication Processing Times at Global Affairs Canada
As the world becomes more connected, the need for securely validated and authenticated documents is becoming increasingly important. This is especially true for Canadian citizens and businesses who need to use their documents in foreign countries. The process of authentication and legalization is essential to ensure that these documents are legally recognized and valid in other countries.
Understanding Global Affairs Canada Authentication Process
Global Affairs Canada is the first step in this process and it is important to understand the current state of the authentication services offered by this department. ALSC has been providing authentication services for over 30 years and in that time, many things have changed for the better. However, one thing that has not changed is the processing times for Global Affairs Canada’s Authentication Services Section.
Back in the early 90’s, the department was only a two-person operation and mail-in processing times ranged from 6-8 weeks, or 30-40 business days, if everything was working efficiently. Today, the department has 10 Authentication Officers with signing authority, but processing times are still slow. However, we have seen a considerable improvement in processing times in the first few weeks of September 2022 and we hope this trend will continue.
How to Avoid Delays in Global Affairs Canada Authentication
So, what does this mean for quicker Global Affairs Authentication Services in the modern age? It is best to remember the advice given on our first visit to the department, “Tell your clients to get started early.” This can be easier said than done, especially when faced with an international matter that requires fast authentication. Nevertheless, this is the reality of the situation and we hope that one day Global Affairs Canada will produce a plan to provide same-day service again. Ensuring the safety of those working and visiting the department is of course the challenge.
According to the Global Affairs Canada Authentication Services Section website, the current average processing time as of September 16, 2022 is 15 business days from the day the request is delivered to their office, plus up to 5 business days for mailing time. It is important to note that this is just an average estimate and some types of documents may be processed more quickly, while others may take longer depending on their complexity. Processing time may also fluctuate depending on work volume and operational factors.
Our tracking shows that as of September 16th, the actual processing time is 16-20 business days from when we submit a document to Global Affairs Canada. We hope that the processing times will continue to improve and we will keep you updated on any changes.
Impact of Embassy Consulate Closures on Authentication Process
After the authentication process is complete, the second step of legalization takes place at the embassy of the country in which you will be using your Canadian documents. This step is often more difficult and requires additional fees, requirements, and processing times, which are subject to change. One of the biggest challenges in the legalization process is unexpected closures at embassies or consulates, which can cause significant delays. Due to current restrictions, many of these offices may not be operating at full staff, making it even more important to start the process as early as possible.
At ALSC, our experienced and knowledgeable team is here to help you navigate the authentication and legalization process, so that you can quickly and efficiently validate your Canadian documents for use in a foreign country.
